The Greer Chamber of Commerce is"focused on meeting the needs of the business community", but surely those needs including protecting the first amendment rights of the citizens in Greer. Businesses and Tourists should consider very carefully coming to Greer, as the Greer Police Department has a history with regards to respecting the rights of citizens, particularly those from an African American background. Recently, a visiting African American photographer was arrested after filming in a public location. Several white police officers initiated contact and demanded identification. When the photographer, Diante Valentine asked what crime he was being accused of, he was swiftly arrested by Lt. Jim Holcombe of the Greer Police Department for interfering with police, even though he was minding his own business, and it was the police who approached him. Businesses/Visitors need to consider whether Greer is supportive of the rights of its citizens, and whether it is wise to invest or visit the community with this heightened tension.
The Greer Chamber is the best in the state! They strive to meet the needs of the community, as well as the businesses in the area. The festivals are fantastic and have become a tradition in Greer. We are proud of our Chamber!
I joined the Greer Chamber of Commerce last year. I've been loosely involved as a member of City Council for years, but my corporate job kept me out of town too often to add depth.
