We recently used Carey Moving (Allied Moving) on our relocation from Greenville to Seattle. Unfortunately there is a reason they were cheaper than other movers and we will never use Allied again.
Absolutely awful. Very sketchy business. We called asking for guys to unload our truck in Greenville once we arrived from Atlanta. They said that it would be no problem but that we needed to pay in cash. **super sketchy**. They said that they would call to confirm our 3:00 PM appointment on Saturday morning, but they never did. They did't show up at 3, and to add insult to injury, they called us at 5:00 once we were already done to tell us they were on the way.
I would not recommend using this company at all. I PAID OVER 9,000 TO THIS COMPANY. Over one year ago we had Carey Moving & Storage move us and one year later they refuse to settle damages that incurred while moving. I purchased their insurance which supposedly was to cover any all damages. I was told it would cover replacement if necessary. THIS POLICY IS NOT A REAL POLICY...THEY CARRY THE INSURANCE IN HOUSE. They are going to want to repair any damages in house to save them money even if it is not to your satisfaction. They don't care about customer satisfaction. Their owner Mike Carey refuses to replace two brand new pieces of furniture that I purchased from Ethan Allen. He wants them repaired and they would never be the same. One is a headboard that is split in to and they want to glue it and patch over it. Totally unacceptable. They refuse to do anything now because I will not accept what they want me to do. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. We had TWO MEN AND A TRUCK MOVE US BEFORE. THEY WERE A LOT CHEAPER AND DID A FAR BETTER JOB.
The problems began once our items were on the road. They reported weather delays, the truck broke down, etc. After several uncomfortable nights in our completely empty house, the movers finally showed up the afternoon of Jan. 10th, five days past their estimate. The “crew” was the driver and his partner; they were nice but both were horribly out of shape, extremely slow unloading the items, and stopped for a smoke break after every trip up the stairs. They recruited a neighborhood teenager to help unload – probably a major insurance risk? As they unloaded we noticed several items on our checklist were stickered incorrectly (the corresponding number on a speaker stand was listed as a “large box”, etc.), many items were not stickered at all, and several had multiple stickers. The driver assured us we had everything, and if something was missing to just file a claim, not a problem. He crossed off all the numbers on the checklist and asked us to sign the paperwork so they could leave. It was late at night by the time they finished so we didn’t unpack many of our items until the next day.
These guys were GREAT! Faster than the original estimate. That never happens! I will use them again in 6 months.
Upon unpacking, we noticed several boxes were soaking wet; fortunately they only held dishes so nothing was damaged. Our clothes reeked of cigarette smoke from the men smoking in the truck. We also noticed the box containing our Miele vacuum cleaner was missing. We contacted Carey immediately and they said they’d ask the driver if they had seen it but that was all they could do. After repeated calls for the status of the missing box, they told us to just file a claim. We did and they immediately rejected it, saying because we signed off on the paperwork it was our problem, not theirs. We had even purchased their additional insurance coverage before the move to cover losses, but it didn’t make any difference. We spoke to the manager at Carey several times and finally talked to the owner, who all held the position that because we didn’t know what number box was missing, how did we know it even made it on the van? What??? They were the ones that numbered half our items wrong, or didn’t bother to number them at all, then made us sign the paperwork to get them out of our house. Apparently we’re supposed to go through every box with the crew standing there to make sure nothing is damaged or missing, even if it means they have to be there for hours after they’ve unloaded everything. In the end, we’re out of a $600 vacuum cleaner; I guess we should consider ourselves fortunate that’s all they lost. Allied lost our vacuum, our trust and our business; we’ll stick to North American or Atlas from now on.
Things started off well; Carey was quick to provide a reasonable quote and schedule our move. They showed up on time on Dec. 23rd with a large crew and protected our floors and furniture during move-out. Other movers we’ve used had a bar code system to track items; Carey only used numbered stickers and a handwritten list, and this would prove to be a major issue down the road. After all items were loaded and the paperwork was done, they estimated our delivery date to be Jan. 5th at the latest.
Consumer beware! We have moved alot, including 4 times in last 6 yrs. Never a bad move until this last one! We contracted with Carey Moving and Storage in Greer. Move of household from Simpsonville, SC to Florence, SC to include full packing and full insurance. They did 2 detailed in home inventory estimates , last one 10 days before move. They left half the packing undone stating they did not have enough staff to send. We cancelled our weekend plans and packed ourselves before the truck came on Monday! At our destination they upcharged us 25% more (several thousand dollars) and refused to move our household in until we paid. The driver had no weight ticket and told us our load had not been weighed. Carey Moving produced a piece of paper with a weight and hand written date a week later. They said they use their own scale, it's old and does not print the date or time. After 5 months we had no repairs to our damaged items. They said the owner thought the repairman they chose charged too much. We asked them to refund what we paid for insurance and we would have the repairs made. No recourse, Intrastate moves are largely unregulated! A word to the wise!
